We wanted to start our own non-profit organization focused on protecting nature for several reasons. Discover how we built Habitats from the ground up, from composing the team to full organizational development, bringing it to the market and fundraising. All with limited time and resources.
Collaboration is key to turn this organization into a success so we decided to collaborate with top experts with a wide variety of expertises to start up Habitats. Our team includes biologists, biodiversity experts, university researchers and professors, storytelllers and and ecotourism expert. This atypical setup allows us to think differently and to run the nonprofit like a startup.
There’s already a lot of nature conservation and restoration projects out there. So why would we start something new? We analyzed the gaps and problems in the current market. You can find some of our insights in our blog on why we started Habitats.
Based on the mapped needs, we built a clear impact strategy focused on systemic change in a very fragmented and complex landscape. We made the clear choice to focus on nature conservation and restoration and on multiple habitats. Everything is interconnected. We need to think ecosystems, not what’s easiest to market and attract funding.
We never want to fall into the typical nonprofit traps, so we created a strong business model focused on maximizing flexibility and scalability while keeping overhead costs to a strict minimum.
We established a clear communications and positioning strategy for Habitats.
We defined a clear fundraising strategy for both the B2C and B2B segment, always working on obvious win wins for all parties involved. The goal: making doing good as accessible and rewarding as possible.
Habitats now has a Belgian and Luxembourgish chapter: two organizations who operate individually but with the same brand, goal and vision and using the same due diligence procedures. In the (near) future, other local chapters will arise as well. All those chapters share resources with each other, making Habitats scalable and cost-efficient at the same time. One global movement with one clear goal.
In 2023, we created Habitats simultaneously in Belgium and in Luxembourg. Two organizations with one common brand, vision, strategy and strict due diligence process. This is the start of an ambitious global movement:
Habitats has a very strong foundation for sustainable growth, which is now leading to the first big donors joining our ecosystem and the first really ambitious nature restoration and conservation projects being initiated. The specific set up working towards an international movement in the most efficient way possible has also drawn the attention in the conservation scene and we are invited to talk about how we set everything up regularly.
